Think about this next time you're ID'd!!

I know, I know... Too much stuff going on in April to not say anything tho! And this article brings up a very valid point to all those anti-Arizona, anti-immigration reform nay-sayers. BTW~ good work Arizona! Way to get the ball rolling in the right direction!

What America is Michael Gerson living in?
By: Byron York
Chief Political Correspondent

In the Washington Post, columnist and former Bush speechwriter Michael Gerson pronounces the new Arizona immigration law "understandable -- and dreadful." Gerson says states do not have the authority "to take control of American immigration policy -- an authority that Arizona has seized in order to abuse." The effect of the new law, he argues, will be bad for everybody:

It makes it harder for illegal immigrants to live without scrutiny -- but it also makes it harder for some American citizens to live without suspicion and humiliation. Americans are not accustomed to the command "Your papers, please," however politely delivered. The distinctly American response to such a request would be "Go to hell," and then "See you in court."

Which leads to the question: What America is Gerson living in? No, we are not confronted by actors with heavy German accents demanding our papers. We are instead confronted routinely by people of all stripes asking to see our driver's license. When we board an airplane, we are asked to produce a government-issued photo ID, usually a driver's license. When we make some credit- or debit-card purchases in department stores, we are asked to produce a driver's license. When we enter many office buildings, both private and government, security guards often ask us to produce a driver's license. When we go to doctors' offices and hospitals, we are asked to produce a driver's license. When we check into hotels, we are asked to produce a driver's license. When we purchase some over-the-counter drugs, we are asked to produce a driver's license. If we go to a bar or nightclub, anyone who looks at all young is asked to produce a driver's license. And needless to say, if we have any encounter with police or other authorities, we are asked to produce a driver's license.

Some situations involve an even higher level of scrutiny. When we get a new job, we are asked to provide not a driver's license but a passport or birth certificate to prove citizenship. In other situations, too: When I renewed my District of Columbia driver's license last year, I had to produce a passport to prove citizenship, even though it was a valid, unexpired license I was renewing. And in many places, buying a gun -- a constitutionally-protected right -- involves enormous scrutiny.

Has Michael Gerson never experienced any of those situations? And by the way, has he read the Arizona law? Does he know that it specifically states that in any encounter with police, when a person produces a valid Arizona driver's license (or, for non-drivers, other forms of ID listed in the law), that person is immediately presumed to be in the United States legally? Given all the situations listed above, can anyone argue that being asked to produce a driver's license, if one is in some sort of encounter with police in which police are acting lawfully (that is also specified by the new law) is overly burdensome? Being asked to produce identification is a burden that falls on everyone.

That is simply a fact of life today. Many of the situations in which we are asked to produce ID are the result of laws passed by our representatives, Democrats and Republicans, that are, overall, good things. But they require Americans to produce their papers, in the form of a driver's license, quite frequently. If Americans responded with "Go to hell" and "See you in court" each time they were asked to produce their license, both hell and court would be very crowded.

P.S. -- All the discussion above relates to people who are American citizens. In addition to the situations requiring a driver's license, some people might not know that since the 1940s, federal law has required non-citizens who are in the United States permanently to carry on their person, at all times, the official documents proving that they are here legally -- green card, work visa, etc. That has been the law for 70 years, and the new Arizona law does not change it.

I'm waiting for a legitimate response...

We did it: Ice Breaker 2010!

The start of the 3 mile. We're somewhere in this mess of people!

65. Heidi Miller, Joplin 43:08 (for females 19-24 group)
67. Annie Miller, Joplin 44:32 (for females 30-34 group)
42. Debbie Miller, Joplin 45:59 (for females 50-54 group)
(results taken from Great Falls Tribune)

We were all pretty much in the middle of our age groups. Not too shabby for our first Ice Breaker! We of course walked the 3 mile event. The weather was terrible until right before our event; then the clouds parted, the winds died down, and it was even a bit warm! Towards the end, we just went and did our own thing, but for the first 2.5 miles, we stuck together. What a fun, rewarding day!

Finished project... THANK YOU DEBBIE!:)

How many mother-in-laws, much less moms, would take the time, patience, and effort to make one of your biggest dreams a reality? Well, maybe most, but how about when it involves re-upholstering old furniture? I am lucky/blessed enough to have one of those mother-in-laws! We have finished our "winter project" with amazing results! I will give you the before pictures:

That was then; this is now!

Not too bad, huh?! Again, Debbie did probably 90% of the work on this. This is definitely a labor of love. It may not be worth much in an antique store, but to me, this is like owning $1,000,000! It's priceless and beautiful. And, I think, my dream Victorian Room is complete.:)

GO LANE BRYANT GO!

Please, if you can, read clips of the article below from msnbc.com:

Lane Bryant is up in arms that two networks — Fox and ABC — have resisted airing a sexy lingerie ad featuring busty, plus-sized models in time periods where the networks have broadcast other racy fare.

In a post on LB's Inside Curve blog, the clothing company complains that "ABC and Fox have made the decision to define beauty for you by denying our new, groundbreaking Cacique commercial from airing freely on their networks."

The post also claims that ABC "restricted our airtime" and refused to air the spot during "Dancing With the Stars," while Fox "demanded excessive re-edits and rebuffed it three times before relenting to air it during the final 10 minutes of 'American Idol,' but only after we threatened to pull the ad buy."

The post continues: "Yes, these are the same networks that have scantily-clad housewives so desperate they seduce every man on the block — and don't forget Bart Simpson, who has shown us the moon more often than NASA — all in what they call 'family hour.'"

The ad depicts several attractive models in the latest line of Lane Bryant lingerie. Ample cleavage — which Bryant says was a problem for the networks — is on display in the ad.

"The networks exclaimed, 'She has ... cleavage!' Gasp!" the blog post states.

"While it's no secret that Victoria's Secret 'The Nakeds' ads are prancing around on major networks leaving little to the imagination, steaming up TV screens and baring nearly everything but their souls, our sultry siren who shows sophisticated sass is somehow deemed inappropriate ... Does this smack of a double standard? Yep. It does to us, too," the post continues.

You know, the women in these Lane Bryant ads are very attractive. And they look like women! Not teenagers with boy hips. I fail to see the excuse "too much cleavage", unless they are trying to tell us Victoria Secret model don't have any (and they might... can a size 2 even have cleavage?! Naturally?!). It is totally a double standard. If you networks are going to pull one lingerie ad, pull them all. The Victoria Secret ads are so pretentious anyway. And what about the Dove campaign? Those women were wearing their skivvies and were *gasp* plus-size! Which really is an insulting label anyway. A model is a model. If they look good, who cares what their dress size is? Frankly, I think a lot of disorders like anorexia and bulimia would be fairly low if we as a society truly admired women of all shapes. Men can get away with it... why can't women?! And Jillian Michaels, I have just lost a lot of respect for you, too. Saying you won't have a baby 'cuz it'll ruin your body. Shame on you! For all the insight you give so many with weight problems and you're just as shallow if not more so than the people you're helping! Of course your body changes, but duh! it's supposed to. We women were created to give birth. And once we do, the love and adoration we have for our kids far out-weighs any superficial worry about our body any day. Do I wish my stomach would magically shrink back? Sure! Do I wish I could rid myself of these ugly Freddy Kreuger like stretch marks? You bet! But I would do it all again, no regrets, 'cuz I love my daughter more than I love a little flaw here and there. Every women is their own worst critic, we all want to look skinny and pretty all the time. But that just isn't reality. We must accept our "flaws", embrace the beauty within and live our lives as happily as we can. Besides, sometimes I think we get too caught up in the surface. Maybe we should celebrate our flaws and be thankful we don't have a terminal illness, or a life-changing disability. But, even in those times, we must learn to adapt and accept.

Uh-oh... am I ranting again?! Well, when I'm right, I'm right!:)

Please indulge me... this just makes me happy!

Guess what came out the other day?! Yup, NFL 2010 season schedule! I am gonna post it all for you, even if you don't care!:) I love that my birthday is surrounded by games opening week. And I really love that I'll be enjoying opening kick off/weekend with my sister and little niece!

It's official!!!

I'm going to meet my niece! Well, not till September, but it's still gonna happen! I am so excited. A nice perk to this ticket it is costing me a big fat nothing. I had enough air miles stored up (thanks to an unfortunate snafu with Delta the last time I traveled), I was able to use them this time. That and Shosh helped a little too! I was originally planning to visit shortly after Reagan's arrival, but Marcia is having plenty of company during that time already, which is great I think. After some looking on-line, ticket prices were ridiculously cheap after Labor Day, plus help a couple months after delivery isn't such a bad way to go either. If you'll notice the dates, you'll see I'll be there during my birthday. Honestly, I didn't think of that at first when I was looking for the ticket, but I think it'll be great! I can't remember the last time we were able to celebrate any birthday on the actual date together. And I'll get to see my niece! Can't wait to dance with her in September! (this song makes me happy thinking about it! and I love this band)

Stupid idiots

I promised no rants. These are more observations with commentary, ok?! (Plus we're kinda snowed in AGAIN today, so I have extra time on my hands) :)

Puma saying goodbye to shoe boxes
The sporting goods maker is launching eco-friendly packaging, cardboard frames wrapped in reusable bags, for its sneakers next year to reduce its carbon footprint.
Puma Chief Executive Jochen Zeitz told Reuters the company would not save money with the new packaging.
What?! Fire this guy!

"To begin with, we don't expect to save costs with this. It may even have a negative impact in the short term. But over the long run, there should be cost savings," he said.

"Sustainability is not only absolutely necessary considering the situation our planet is in, we as companies are also overdue to take responsibility," Zeitz said. "We can't wait for governments. Companies have to lead the way and we want to be among the leaders."

I tell ya, hippies. They are really not aware, are they?

Justin Bieber glad he's not a 'corny' Disney star.
The teen pop sensation says the hip-hop community has embraced him because he didn't go the 'Disney route"I think it's because I didn't go through the Disney route. I didn't go corny, but, like, at the same time I've been cool and collected."

But there is one former Disney child star Bieber is inspired by -- ex-Mouseketeer Justin Timberlake.

He adds, "Well, basically I look at people like Usher and Justin Timberlake and how they went from being a child star to blowing up and doing what they're doing now. I look up and see what they do and see that's what I want to do ... and things that I want to do that's different and things that I wanna do that's working for them.

Umm... double standard?
Justin T. was a "corny" Disney star, as were a majority of people this dummy probably admires. Have you heard his crap? It's worse than Disney, trust me.

Now, more than four years after his son died in a Humvee accident in Iraq, Albert Snyder's legal battle is headed to the Supreme Court. And his tireless efforts have drawn support from across the country, including a wave of donations after he was ordered to pay the church's court costs — a $16,500 judgment that the congregation plans to use for more protests.

Lance Cpl. Matthew A. Snyder, 20, was not gay. But for the Westboro church, any dead soldier is fair game. Pastor Fred Phelps oversees a congregation of 70 to 80 members — mostly his children and grandchildren. They consider themselves prophets, and they insist the nation is doomed.
Talk about boiling blood. These people are a whole new level of crazy!

Fox News commentator Bill O'Reilly pledged to pay the entire $16,510, and the American Legion has raised more than $20,000. Every day, hundreds of envelopes arrive at Summers' office. Snyder plans to use the money for other court fees and to donate what's left over to veterans.

The judge who ruled in favor of these wackos should have the same treatment at his funeral. Seriously, a funeral is no place for First Amendment Rights to be exercised, and anyone who thinks otherwise needs to be taken down a notch or 20. What really gets me about this, tho is this "church's" use of God in their cause. It's really irritating that people like this use the God-of-convenience for whatever they feel will justify their cause. I am so weary of anyone who uses the God-of-convenience for whatever. I think God is pretty clear on a lot of issues, and those who want to muddle His meaning for their own cause are asking for a judgement that I can't even imagine.

Just an update...

I promised no more rants this month, so I'll have to leave Big Ben Roethlisberger alone for now. But no getting-off-the-hook-free cards here, buddy... I am watching you!

I did want to share with you about my diet today... I am down 14 pounds! I started April 2, too. I will not divulge specifics yet, as I have 5 more weeks of this diet, then 3 weeks of maintenance, so time will tell, but 14 pounds really is motivating. I am missing my beloved coffee cream and soda, however...

I am still planning to participate in the Ice Breaker in Great Falls the end of this month. However, because of how restrictive this diet is, I can only walk. So I will be doing the leisurely 1 mile walk, but it is still says something in my book to actually go to this event! Us Miller girls will be making a day of it too, so it should be a great day!

And in no particular order...

I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter! We took some family with us to church and then followed that up with a delicious buffet dinner at a local restaurant with Gramma Miller. I was in the beginning stages of a rotten, miserable cold that day. Yesterday was even worse. I wasn't even in the mood to talk to Shosh! It was a day where I wish my mom lived closer. As a mom, I am happy to put my needs below my daughter's. It is natural. But on a day where I am very much under the weather, it would be nice to be mothered than to mother! Mom always new how to make us feel better; it was her nature. I really missed that yesterday. I think I am a bit better today. I have a slight productive, painful cough, runny nose, aching muscles, fatigue, my lungs sounds like a straw in liquid blowing bubbles and the neatest part: changing my pj's once a night due to sweating! The weird part is I have no fever, but all the symptoms of one. Anyway, I still managed to get out on Easter and enjoy the day with family.

I love coffee. With cream. I am not allowed to have cream in my coffee with this new diet! Ugh. I am not a fan of black coffee. It is bitter and tasteless. But it's for the greater good. If this diet goes as it should, I will report happy stats to you in good time. Otherwise, I will never mention it again as just another fad/lame diet. With age comes some wisdom, and I have no unrealistic expectations for myself. I just want to be able to buy off the rack. So... for the ump-teenth time, here's to another go at another diet!

Donovan McNabb as a Redskin?! Can the world be ending?! There are two things I hate about off-season... well three: 1) No Football. It's bad, people... the withdrawals are bad. 2) Trading amongst players/teams. This latest trade would be a good example of this. McNabb as a Redskins is just wrong. Plus the Eagles have let go a lot of good players so far, so look for them to struggle this next season. What are they thinking about?! It doesn't help that I am living with an Eagles fan, but I hoped McNabb would be a career Eagle. I miss the days of loyalty. The salary cap could be to blame for that... I need to do more research on that aspect of the game to fully understand how it works. 3) Baseball started. Can they play any longer?! Their season runs from April to October! They hoard in on everyone elses season, their games interrupt a lot of prime time programs... Boo to baseball season!

My sister, Marcia, just made history in a way. She attended one of the very last space shuttle launches yesterday. Yes, folks, our shuttle program is just about that: History. Our king-leader of a President is cancelling all funding to the NASA program and making it into a global warming watch program (excuse the excessive eye rolling). Many people will be losing their jobs. Yet another example of American Exceptionalism thrown out the window. You know, Obama is just a joke. I really could rant on what he's doing to health care. I really could. But I won't. Since Tony and I have been married, we always got a refund at tax time. This year we owed. And you know what the only change was? Obama. You bet: here's your hope and CHANGE! We don't even make close to the ungodly *gasp* $250,000, but we still owed this year. I am really mad at all those people who voted emotionally and not logically this last presidential election. Revenge is no way to go. (and frankly, a lot of charges brought against Bush were indeed fabricated) But, now I am suffering for other people's ignorance. So, we have a (actual) health care crisis, a nearly non-existent space program, increased taxes, 10% unemployment rate.. and has anyone else noted to rising gas prices like we did 2 years ago?! Great Job, No-bama.

I must be getting older. All the "up and coming" stars look like they just learned how to write last week! Justin Bieber? He's cute as a 2 year old. Seriously. Did crushes I had in junior high look like this? I think they at least had facial hair! We watch plenty of cartoons in this house, including the Disney Channel. When did 16 become the new 28? Why do those girls dress like that? Someone should tell Miley, Demi, and Miranda what wearing high healed shoes like that does to your feet later in life (hello ugly bunions!). I am all for dressing in cute clothes, as long as they are age appropriate. And singing about adult issues they know NOTHING about?! You're 16 for crying out loud, surrounded by your little yes-man bubbles... what do you know about actual commitment and responsibility? But who do I blame? Disney, moms of tweens for buying this crap... it puzzles me. Or do I sound like an old geezer:) Bring it!

Thanks for indulging me. I promise no more rants for the month... just the mood I've been in lately. I think I'm better now... maybe. A little? *shrugs*
