Super Bowl week!!

Before I get into my 2nd most favorite time of the year (Christmas is my 1st), I heard a joke I have to share:

So, Brett is thinking of retiring (*snort*) and opening a pastry shop. His specialty? Turnovers!!

Ha! C'mon, I know you're laughing:)

I have let a week pass between for a reason... I was afraid I'd rub it in a little too much. But, I told you so. There, no more gloating from me. Ok, on to the Super Bowl!

They always say "defense wins the game". I still believe this to be true for this Super Bowl, but in a different way. Both teams are offense oriented. I expect to see a score in the high 20's low 30's for both teams. The defense that gets exploited the most will be the team that loses. And when you're playing against Peyton Manning and more importantly, Tom Moore, offensive coach wizard extraordinaire, I think you will lose. To watch those 2 come out in the 2nd half against the Jets last week was pure genius to watch. They picked the Jets defense apart after a disastrous 1st half. The Saints defense will have it's work cut out for sure. I am not so sure the Saints got in the Super Bowl on pure defensive stances and offensive power, due to the Vikings incredible ability to turn the ball over on key plays. It's hard to say. I think that the Colts have talent and experience on their side for sure. Plus, let's face it, friends, the Saints are playing like it's owed them because of Katrina. I am not saying they played well and have turned it up and notch or two since that disaster, but no one deserves to win more than anyone here for any reason. Play football and play to win!! I have been watching analysis of both sides for the last few days and the consensus is there is no consensus. Both teams are good. Colts will most likely be playing without Dwight Freeney, and this is a HUGE loss. Jeremy Shocky isn't 100% for the Saints and he is a big play maker. The Manning/Brees showdown is sure to live up to it's hype. I look for this game to go to the wire. I however like the Colts, they have integrity, strength, experience, depth... hard to beat in all categories in my book. Colts 34, Saints 29.

Enjoy the Super Bowl!

Along these lines, kudos to a class act in Kurt Warner. He leaves the game with his health, as a future hall of famer, and set an example for some (*cough* Brett) on how to leave with grace and dignity. He was a Cinderella story for the NFL and a person to genuinely respect and admire. Best wishes, #13!

Winter Project

It has been a dream of mine to own decent Victorian themed furniture for quite awhile. I love that era as far as interior design is concerned. I purchased this chair and matching couch a few years back for next to nothing with the intention to reupholster and stain. Well, I am making good on that intention this winter thanks to my mother in law Debbie, Tony, and an unexpected, but wonderful gift from my parents.
Before... a diamond in the rough?

Aria took this "action shot". It's a lot of work to take fabric off a piece of furniture!

Starting to make some progress!

Bare bones

What it looks like now...

I found the perfect fabric, but to my great disappointment, every place I check on for it, has discontinued it! I am searching for the perfect replacement now. Tony is stripping the wood and will stain it for me. Debbie has some experience with re-upholstery, so with her gracious help, we'll hopefully have my beautiful new Victorian seating done before summer! I am so happy to have this done and anxious to see the final result!

What gives?!

So the one game I thought would be a blowout over the weekend was the closest game, the Cardinals played like they did during the regular season, the Cowgirls were suck-tastic (I love that little fact, tho)... the way some of these teams played, it's like they weren't aware they were 2 game away from a potential Super Bowl win! Now we have the Jets playing the Colts for AFC (how much is the Colts organization regretting that "let's throw the towel in on the season" 2 games before playoffs, allowing the Jets to sneak in as a wild card). The Saints and the Vikings are playing for the NFC championship.

Considering the history, or lack there of, of playoff experience for both the Vikes and the Saints, let's consider the personnel that are playing for these 2 teams. The Saints have been building a quality team since Sean Payton came on board as head coach. His apparent work ethic and leadership, esp. in a franchise that has never known what winning really was, really boosted the team to where they are today. The addition of Drew Brees as QB really cemented an already tough offense. Add Reggie Bush, Marques Colston, Jeremy Shockey, and a solid front line, you've got a great offense with lots of options. The defense, with names like Scott Fujita, Darren Sharper, Randall Gay, Roman Harper to name a few, you have experience and confidence.

The Vikings can match up very well here. The offense has many weapons: Adrian Peterson, Visanthe Shaincoe, Sidney Rice, even Chester Taylor. I won't mention someone wearing #4, as this team was this good last year, without that number, they just didn't know it. Defense has names like Jared Allen, Pat Williams, Kevin Williams, Chad Greenway and they are tough! Oh, if only my Grandpa Del were alive to see how well the Vikes are doing this year! Well, I guess he knows... it'd be funny to hear him react to it, tho! There has been a lot of drama in Vikingland, due mostly to someone wearing a #4, and if we see a Viking loss, I have to wonder where #4 will journey next year. But, I'll have to comment on that on another time.

I hope for the sake of the game, that this is a barn burner! I want to see a close, hard fought game. This 24 to 3 nonsense will not do! These teams have lots of depth and experience on both sides of the ball. Come to play and play to win! They will be in New Orleans, which is to the Saints favor. I really think this will be the key to who wins: home field advantage. I also still believe Brett won't set foot in Miami for the Super Bowl as a player. Saints 24-Vikings 23.

Did I or did I not warn about the Colts playing the Jets again in the playoffs??!! And don't even get me started on how Brett played for the Jets last year and could play against them this year... I am not right about a lot of things, but I was right about this. It also seems to do something to team morale when your coach states "we are playing in the Super Bowl". The Jets have stumped me. They have not played this well all year! Guess you can see different sides of teams/players in playoffs. I believe, however, that the Colts will handle the Jets next week. I'm sure the Jets have a few tricks up their sleeves, but the Colts are just better, better, better. Enough said. Colts 16- Jets 10.

I would like to also mention how I don't like that the Pro Bowl is being played before the Super Bowl this year. The Pro Bowl to me is like a big collective sigh that a long hard season is over and let's enjoy ourselves. They moved it to avoid conflicts with other big press events and frankly who cares! I like moving it away from Honolulu exclusively, as now people who can't afford to fly there, now may have the opportunity to see their favorite players live. But play it once the season is over, so the high caliber stars who are playing in the Super Bowl can focus on that and not be distracted by a game just for funzies.

Perhaps better predictions this week?

Ok, I know... 1-3 last week. To tell you the truth, I put who I wanted to win, not who I thought would win. It pains me to say the Cowgirls are playing good football right now, but they are. I am really interested in this week's games cuz I have read several articles, esp. on the Colts and how they deserve to lose this week for "giving up on perfection". While I like the Colts, I kinda agree with that. Anyone who assumes something, whether right or wrong, is still assuming and you know what that does. (hint: A-S-S U M-E) No I want the Colts to win, but it really makes it hard to cheer for a franchise that can't play to win. And won't you know, the Jets could potentially meet the Colts for the AFC championship. Still think the Jets should not be this far in the playoffs, but they took a gift and ran with it!

Cardinals @ Saints: I really like Kurt Warner. In a world of Tiger Woods, Pacman Jones, Gilbert Arenas... Kurt's a refreshing breath of moral air. The Saints are a Cinderella story really. When was the last time they had a winning season, ever? Except a couple years ago, NEVER! I think the Cardinals have lots of good momentum going into this game and the Saints were losing their touch towards the end of the regular season. They've had a week off to figure out their problems, but I don't think they'll be able to stop Warner and their high powered offense. Could be another high scoring game! Cardinals 42-Saints 38.

Ravens @ Colts: Again, I like the Colts. They should be able to beat the Ravens. Other than the Jets, I believe the Ravens don't belong here. They may have at the beginning of the season, but they don't have the talent or experience of any of these other teams. But, due to Colts "resting" for the last few weeks, I am sure we'll see some rusty plays and won't it be sad/funny to see one of them get hurt? So much for that idea! I am not advocating an injury, but it happens. Apparently Caldwell and the Colts management didn't get that memo. Colts 21- Ravens 19.

Cowgirls @ Vikings: Ugh! Who do I want to see lose MORE?! Brett is so sure he's leading this team to the Super Bowl, he's probably mastering that fake cry thing (you know, the one he whips out every time he retires) when he holds the trophy. Then there is the Cowgirls. America's team *snort*. I'd like to see an old man bowl for the NFC championship (Warner vs. Favre). I never cheer for the Cowgirls. I will cheer for the Vikings, except Brett. How's that for compromise? Vikings 28-Cowgirls 23.

Jets @ Chargers: The game I'm least interested in. Jets, meh. Chargers, meh. Don't care who wins as they will face the Colts in AFC championship, then call it a season. Chargers should win this easily as I'm still not convinced of the Jets playoff potential. They were given a gift people! Chargers 27-Jets 10.

So I expect to see the Vikes and Cards for NFC championship, and Colts and Chargers for AFC Championship. The Super Bowl will feature the Colts vs. Cardinals. Now, I'll put my crystal ball away. Have fun!

First playoff prediction

2 games today, 2 games tomorrow. Well, guess I'm booked for the weekend!

Jets @ Bengals: This game will be played in conditions that, for anyone, will be treacherous. The Jets were given a gift by the Colts in winning their last game to be here today. I don't think the Jets can muster a win in the playoffs. It would be really funny if they did advance and (impossible but fingers crossed) got farther than the Vikings. But I don't think they have the experience to advance beyond this game. Jets QB is a rookie, but we've already had our breakout rookie season recently (Big Ben) and Sanchez is nowhere close to Roethlisberger. Bengals by 13.

Eagles @ Cowboys: So everyone seems convinced that this will be the year Romo can actually win a playoff game. Yes, the Cowgirls are 2-0 against the Eagles. Last weeks game was a cop out in my opinion. The Cowgirls were in shotgun for almost every offensive play of the game. Ok, it worked, but I'm sure it won't work 2 weeks in a row. I wonder if Andy Reid has some trick up his sleeve and we'll see the Eagles like we haven't seen them all season. The Eagles have one thing the Cowgirls don't: consistency winning playoff games. Eagles by 6.

Ravens @ Patriots: Pats in a wild card game. Weird. I haven't been impressed with anything related to the Patriots this year. The Ravens started off stellar, then digressed as the season went on. The Pats showed some sort of life towards the end of the season, but it wasn't the typical dominance we've been used to seeing. This may actually be a well fought game. I predict this to go into OT and the Pats will win by a field goal.

Packers @ Cardinals: Packers won't advance. The thing with wild card games is there are usually a couple of teams who got in by chance, luck... I think the Packers are one of these teams. Now the Cardinals aren't the team they were last year, but they should dominate this game. Now, again, if the Packers were to get farther than say, the Vikings, well that would just be great. But, I've been getting used to disappointment. Cardinals by 10.

On a totally non-football related note, Daniel is now in Korea and Marcia is home alone in Georgia (does anyone else love the movie Home Alone like me?!). Shosh has plenty to keep her busy and Daniel is looking forward to this opportunity, but keep them in your prayers as I'm sure there will be good days and bad. Shosh is doing well and the baby is growing fast and well! I also got word that my Gramma is in the ICU with probable heart failure. It can be treated, but she needs your prayers also. Thanks everyone and have a great weekend!

Is my Prozac Rx ready?

Just kidding! But, the Christmas decorations are down, one month left in my beloved NFL... the winter blues might be setting in. But Brett did lose last week... whew!!! I feel much better! Tomorrow is the last in regular season for the NFL. Most of the questions about who is advancing and who is calling it a season has been decided.

Colts @ Bills: For me to agree 2 weeks in a row with Jason Whitlock must mean the apocalypse is coming soon! First he had a great read on Brett, then he ripped into the Colts foolish decision to bench their starters with 2 games left to play in the regular season. You play to win, ALWAYS. "well what if Peyton gets hurt"? Happens. Tom Brady was injured the first game of the season last year. If that is the philosophy we're dealing with, why play anyone if we're afraid of that? It's a reality, like it or not, of the game. "we're keeping our players fresh for post-season". Um, no you're not. Past seasons show when Peyton came into post-season "rested", he choked BIG TIME. Stay fresh by staying in the game: you won't lose your rhythm, your timing, your game face. "the perfect record means nothing to us". Laughable. Who doesn't what to break records? Isn't that what records are made for... to be broken? I was annoyed with last weeks game as a fan and as someone who thinks common sense is lacking in a lot of today's politics and athletics. Why let a team (the Jets) who if they lost, their chances for getting to playoffs is pretty much over, beat you so that now they are in the playoffs and give them the opportunity to maybe beat you again. Where's the genius in that decision? Sorry to rant, but I think what the Colts did last Sunday was pathetic. I imagine that many of the main starters for the Colts will be sitting on the sidelines again this week. The Colts should win this game, but if the previous statement is correct, it's any one's game. Colts by 10...

Saints @ Carolina: Another eye rolling induced here. Rumors are swirling that Brees may be watching this game from the sidelines too. Which would be ill-advised as the Panthers have been playing great football this month. Yes the Saints are in the playoffs, yes they are the team to beat in the NFC. Why give the Panthers reasons to doubt that? Rawr! People: PLAY TO WIN ALWAYS! Anyway, same situation with the Colts; if Brees play, Saints win, if not... who knows. Saints by 4.

Giants @ Vikings: This may be an interesting game. Vikings are floundering (I hate to say I told you so, but didn't I warn you about Brett!?) (and wasn't last weeks game against the Bears satisfying on so many levels... just me? ok) and the Giants are nothing but a giant train wreck. Giants were once considered the team to beat, but now aren't even in the playoff picture. Vikings are in, but for how long? This game may tell us a lot about both teams; one who had a QB who thinks he's running the show and undermining his coach while bringing his team down in flames with him and another team who is trying to decide if they got a little carried away with thoughts of waltzing to playoffs untouched. Giants by 7.

Steelers @ Dolphins: What happened to these 2 teams? The Steelers look nothing like last year... what a difference one player makes, huh Palomalu? The Dolphins started out in a wild-cat offense that was hard to beat, then nothing. I do think the Steelers should win this match up by 17.

Eagles @ Cowboys: Easily this week's game of the week. If the Eagles win, they are the #2 seed in the NFC. The Eagles have been thisclose to Super Bowl so many years, but their ability to be consistent this year it their Achilles heal. Cowgirls win could pose problems for the Eagles. The Cowgirls have struggled in December for years. The game is in Dallas, which may work against the Eagles. I think the Eagles have great potential, as long as Donovan can stay accurate. Eagles by 9.

Packers @ Cardinals: Another big NFC game. Both are in the playoffs, but where the Cardinals play is up to how they perform in this game. Packers have had a lack-luster season, but it was okay to may playoffs. We'll see. Cardinals by 12.

I've posted a playoffs tracker here to maybe make things a little easier to see what is at stake for who. I get confused with how this team's win affect that team's chances. Hope this helps!
