No, my house is fine!

The title to this post is a response I gave more than once after the heart breaker of a game Sunday afternoon. I had a few calls and a couple different people were checking to make sure I didn't light the house on fire or something. I did have a toy of Aria's that flew across the room, but no damage was done.

Yes, Brett Favre and the Vikes BARELY beat my '9ers. BARELY people. Like 2 seconds left in the game... that would classify as BARELY. Brett is lucky he had a veteran receiver in Greg Lewis to pull that throwin'-it-up-hoping-something-purple-catches-it pass. Brett was even cocky enough to admit he had no idea who caught the ball. Way to know your team, Brent. I really don't know what the 49ers were doing with 1:40 left in the game and they ran the ball up the gut not once, not twice, but 3 and out! Poor management of the clock! I also would like to know who hired those 2 clowns who were calling the game: "Brett plays to win" and "Brett doesn't care about stats as long as he wins" oh puh-leeeze! "Brett loves winning" really? "Look at Brett, he just loves to win" Dumb@$$!! Who doesn't like to win?! It was sick listening to them drool over Brett. I was about to go to the ER to get some insulin, and then I had a heart attack instead. The 49ers proved they are for real, and until that last 2 seconds, Brett looked like a has-been (he still does if you ask me). Once again, the 49ers kept Peterson pretty quiet, except for 1 run. I am having fun here but, there were more games than this one.

The Lions won!! The Lions WON! Now global warming may become reality, my hair is actually jet black, and Elvis may be alive ever since the Lions won. Seriously, how sad is it when a professional team can't get a win for 19 games in a row?! This is crazy! I don't know what to think of the Dolphins, Titans, Bengals, Steelers, Cardinals, or Texans. These teams are pretty inconsistent, even if some of them have key injuries. The Giants are really revving it up and are the team to keep an eye on for now. Anyone else notice that the Broncos are doing well and guess who is helping majorly with that... Mike Nolan, Broncos defensive coordinator and former head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. Hmm...

Week 3 'round the corner!

This week, no this month is going way too fast! It's late Saturday night, and I haven't posted my picks for week 3. So here they are!

Browns vs. Ravens: Ravens are doing well. Good ol' Ray Lewis is a senior citizen in NFL terms, but moves like he's new to the league. I continue to be impressed with Flacco and the Raven offense. Browns are still struggling. Ravens by 13.

49ers vs. Vikings: Normally I don't put my own team in this line up, as it's quite obvious who I would pick, but this is different. Now Brett, you almost had me with your Sears commercial last week "I hate guys who can't make decisions". But I am not that easily swooned! I look for Brett's magic to start to fade beginning tomorrow. My '9ers have been playing well, this will be a good test for them. I pick my '9ers by a field goal.

Saints vs. Bills: I have been overlooking the Saints, so now I stop. Drew Brees is off to a great start. It is only week 3, so it may be too soon to give him the MVP award, but I've heard rumors it could be his this year. So don't let me down Saints for a win by 9... um, T.O. who?

Dolphins vs. Chargers: The Dophlins could've easily won last week against the Colts. LT is still out and the Chargers just don't look like they did last year. I also, while mocking the Dolphins ownership last week, forgot who's behind the scenes: Bill Parcels. Dolphins by 10.

Colts vs. Cardinals: I think the Colts lost some major points in their near loss to the Dolphins last week; many are predicting the Cardinals to win. The Cardinals were fun to watch last year and their Super Bowl appearance was very memorable, but this team isn't the same this year. They have to prove to a lot, including me, that last year wasn't a fluke. Sorry Warner. The Colts have some key injuries this week so it may be interesting. Colts by 3 in overtime.

Panthers vs. Cowboys: Boy, Romo has been taking a lot of flack since his performance in the Cowboys new dome! He's a choke artist when it counts. I agree with the critics, he has not deserved this superstar rep. he has gotten. He has plenty to work with! The Panthers were once a NFC champion, but have spiraled downward slowly ever since. But, people, c'mon! It's the Cowgirls!! My spoiler pick: Panthers by 7.

On a personal note, this will hopefully be the last weekend I enjoy the NFL in either a lazyboy recliner or large dish chair. We sold our old sofa set a week ago to make room for the new set. Our sofa has arrived in Great Falls, but we won't be able to pick it up till next Saturday (delivery to Joplin is too expensive). I can't wait to watch week 4 in absolute comfort and style next week! =D

I'm too excited to sleep!

'member that commercial with the little boy who couldn't sleep cuz he and his family were going to Disney? Well, that would be Aria and I! I just bought tickets to visit my sister and her hubby in November and we will all go to Disney World (some of the nice perks for serving our country- thanks Daniel!). Aria wants to pack tonite and leave tomorrow. I was at Disney world the summer before my sophomore year for Life '95. We did alot of sightseeing, but Disney was definitely a highlight. I was sorta bummed at the time cuz we could only see one section of the park, the Magic Kingdom. I always hoped I could go back to see more of the park. We may not get to see all of it, but at least most of it. It will be really fun to watch Aria and experience Disney with her. I am mostly just excited to see Marcia again. I get somewhat, well, jealous of Tony and his family here in Joplin. They all live right here, or in Chester. It's nice to have the excuse to go to Billings (or Georgia)and get outta town, but there are days where I wish my family was just a block or a 10 minute drive away. Last time we saw each other was March 2008. That's just too long for me! Can't wait to see ya, Shosh (and Daniel)!!! :)

High scoring week 2

Wow... a fun, very unpredictable week 2! Who knew so many high scores could be posted in the same week. The one game I figured would be a blow out was one of the lowest scoring games of the week: Pats vs. Jets. I admit, Rex Ryan can back up the talk after the Jets shut down New England. I was surprised at how well they did it. Not sure if Brady is a bit rusty from last year's injury or what, but the Jets should be taken a bit more seriously now. As should the Saints. If anything was proven in that game, it's that the Eagles are average at best without McNabb. I think I was surprised the most, however, by the Dolphins. They kept up with the Colts till about 2 minutes to go in the game. What needs to be stressed about this game was that the Colts had only 3 snaps the whole 2nd half! The Dolphins still lost after all that time possessing the ball. Unbelievable! I had to laugh at the sportscasters, they were pretty sure the Dolphins had put this one away (maybe except Gruden, he was slobbering over Manning all night) and I thought about a game I watched on Monday night several years ago. The Colts were down by at least 2 touchdowns with less than 5 minutes to play in the game. Manning was brilliant and led the Colts to win that game without going into overtime. I think they were playing the Bucs, which could explain Gruden's obsession. Manning also surpassed former Colt Johnny Unitas in getting his 119 win. I think he's #5 on the list now for most career wins. Perhaps my wondering out loud if Manning was near expiration date was a bit premature. My '9ers pulled off a great win against the Seahawks. Considering the stink this rookie Crabtree is making, they are carrying on very well. He's not the first to pull the "I'm worth way more than $20,000,000" sob story and he won't be the last. It is a mindset that I can't identify with. What I could do with $50,000! Good week for football. Stay tuned, cuz next week, my '9ers play the Vikes.. could get ugly!:)

Seriously, I love the NFL!!

Can this month go any faster? Geez... slow down a bit. Older people are right, tho, the older you get, the faster time flies. The only thing I wonder is that as fast as time is going now, if it goes any faster, should I really even bother changing out of my pj's? Just wonderin'.

Did I predict than Vikings/Browns game or what?! Nailed that sucker right outta the park!!! So just wait... Brett's only got about a month left of "magic", then watch the spectacular fizzle into failure. Sorry, Vikes fans, I really want to pull for you, but with Brett playing for you, it's totally goes against everything in my body. So, I went 5-7 of all my picks for week 1. I kinda had a few predictions that were way off, but no one is perfect. Frankly, I only care that I got the MN game right, so there! 3 cheers for my '9ers and holding off the NFC champions, Arizona!

Now for week 2; some good match ups. Here it goes...

Vikings@Lions: a no-brainer. Brett will continue to dazzle, the Lions will spazzle (I know, but what rhymes with dazzle?). Vikes 24, Lions 10.

Pats@ Jets: the Jets head coach, Rex Ryan, just gave his team the kiss of death this week with "I'm not going to kiss Belichick's rings" bit and all. Pats 34, Jets 14.

Saints@Eagles: Wow. McNabb is hurt?! Who'da thunk? But even with him out with broken ribs (ouch!), Eagles should win 17-14.

Ravens@Chargers: SD just about lost a lot of fantasy points with an near loss to the Raiders last week. I have yet to see this amazingly talented team that is Super Bowl bound this year. The Ravens continue to dominate both sides of the ball. Raven 21, Chargers 12.

Giants@Cowboys: Ugh! The Cowgirls. Their new stadium. It's more about show than sport, I think. How much better to christen the new stadium in their first regular season debut than with a loss? To the Giants, no less! Giants 24, Cowgirls 17.

Colts@Dolphins: Marc Anthony and Gloria Estefan are now part owners of the Dolphins. Hahahahahahahaha!! HA! Too easy: Colts 28, Dolphins 13.

K, there week 2 predictions for ya. As always, happy watching! Go '9ers!!!!

*sing*"It's the most wonderful time of the year"... wait a minute

Well, I survived turning 30! It was a pretty good day. Mom came up to visit for a couple of days, including on my b-day, I was taken out to lunch by Joette and Shana, had lots of phone calls and nice cards and gifts. The biggest surprise was a balloon and flower bouquet including a black rose from Shana and Eric. It was thoughtful and hilarious at the same time. I ended the day with a visit from Heidi and of course football!!! What a great way to start the NFL season. That game was way more low scoring than I thought and went into OT for added drama. I hope Polamalu recovers quickly, not for Steelers fans sake (they aren't as tough without him), he is so fun to watch! I am 0-1 in my predictions however, but it was still a great game. I will be gone this weekend as Tony is taking me to Great Falls for a late b-day getaway (and he worked a 60 hour week this week, I hardly saw him even on my bday!). So I'll leave my week 1 prediction here now and hopefully catch a game or two as the weekend progresses.

Minnesota @ Cleveland: Lots of changes between these two teams. Not sure how Cleveland will respond right away to Mangini and his staff, but they had a lot going for them last year and the year before. Perhaps coaching change will push them over that 10-5 season. Brett Favre. If you don't know how I feel about him, look back through this blog... you'll find I am not a fan. And any team that is "blessed" with his presence, is doomed. However, I think Minnesota has a bit of Favre-itis, so I think they'll be hot for the first few games of the season. I am predicting Minnesota over Cleveland by 14.

Kansas City @ Baltimore: Kansas City acquired Matt Cassel over the off season, and he went and got himself injured already. Nice. KC is rebuilding, and Baltimore's D is always tough. Bad combo here. Poor O against a tough D. Also am impressed with Baltimore's QB, Flacco. Baltimore should win this easily. This will be my shut-out game: Baltimore 17, KC 0.

Jacksonville @ Indianapolis: The Colts have a new head coach. Jacksonville always seems like they have a good team, they just can never win. I think the Colts will be pretty good this year, but will have some kinks to work out in the beginning. I will miss Tony Dungy for sure. I really like Peyton Manning, but am wondering how long he has left to return to a championship or if his day in the sun is over. Indianapolis 14, Jacksonville 10.

Washington @ NY Giants: Speaking of Manning's, Eli will be the Manning brother to watch. I like Tom Coughlin more and more each season. But I like Jim Zorn pretty well, too. I think the Giants have championship caliber potential and the Redskins aren't too far behind. This should be a fun game. Giants by a field goal, 20-17.

Chicago @ Green Bay: Aaron Rodgers has stepped into Green Bay and done pretty good, considering Favre wouldn't give him the time of day when he arrived. They are a solid team, but not as good as the Bears. I hate to say that mostly because of Jay Cutler. Cutler seems to think he's God's gift to football and life in general. A shot or 100 of humility would do him some good, but he's got Lovie Smith and a good D and O to help boost his ego. The Bears will dominate this game 24-14.

San Diego @ Oakland: Speaking of ego's, hello Philip Rivers. If only Rivers could play on the opposing team, perhaps that would bring him down a notch or two. Oakland is a disaster. The Lions '08 record is up for grabs, maybe Oakland will be in the running to take the crown. As one sports commentator put it, welcome to Oakland the Black Hole. BTW, I think LT is past his prime. San Diego 28, Oakland 7.

So enjoy week one everyone! On a personal note, my '9ers play the Cardinals. Arizona is out to prove last year wasn't a fluke and my '9ers are hoping for a better season. Should be a good division game. Good news for me, Alex Smith is not starting... season already looks good!

My conclusions from preseason

My conclusions from preseason are that nothing can be concluded. It's fun to speculate, however, so here I go!!

I read somewhere about sleeper teams in the NFL. The term sleeper refer to teams who start the season under the radar, but get positive attention as the season goes on due to much improved performance. The team that got the highest sleeper rating? My 49ers. Now, I did take this with a boulder of salt, but I have to believe they will do better than they did last year. Other teams mentioned were the Bills, the Bears, the Texans, the Seahawks... you begin to see the company the '9ers are in. As far as teams that I think will be tough this year, in no particular order: Steelers, Titans, Giants. Teams to watch are the Chargers, Patriots, Cardinals, Colts, and Ravens. I am not sure the Cardinals will be the team they were last year. The Colts and how they transition with a new head coach will be interesting to watch. Even tho he was handed the reins by Tony Dungy, Jim Caldwell will have some things to learn. I was no fan of Jay Cutler in Denver, I don't think I will be in Chicago either. Teams I predict to have not so stellar seasons are the Vikings, Raiders, Lions and Bengals.

I know this is kinda vague, but so is how the first, second, and third weeks in regular season. Time will tell. For now, this is how I see things, but injuries happen, coaches are fired. For the opening season kickoff, game Sept. 10, I pick the Titans over the Steelers by 7 in a great match up to start the 09-10 season.

one missed number and...

A phone conversation from yesterday...

A sleepy sounding Paul: "hey!"

Me: "hey!"

A still sleepy sounding Paul: "what's going on?"

Me: "I'm calling to wish you happy birthday!"

A confused Paul: "WHAT?!" who's identity I just am now starting to doubt.

Me: "Isn't this Paul?"

Stranger on the phone: "No!" oh boy...

Me (stating the obvious here's your sign): "oh no! I have the wrong number!"

Stranger on the phone: "*laughing*yes you do! But thanks for the birthday greeting!"

Me (completely embarrassed, even tho I have no idea who I am talking to: "you're welcome. BYE!"

Stranger on the phone: "*still laughing* k- bye!"

CLICK

God gave me blond hair for a reason. Have I ever mentioned how many times I've called my father-in-law "honey" over the phone. It's more than once.

I did finally get ahold of Paul. Happy 23rd, Pauly-wally-doodle-all-the-day!!!!
